Hi all,

Not sure if I chose the right category, but let’s see.

I have Photosensitive Epilepsy but haven’t had a seizure in over 15yrs so I am able to drive. However I struggle when I see cyclists with flashing strobe lights on their bikes, coming towards me in the dark.

I have started a petition to ask for parliament to make it a rule that the cyclists can’t have light flashing above a certain frequency, as not to cause seizures.

I’d be grateful if anyone could sign it.

"I think they ought not flash below a certain frequency." The minimum is sixty times a minute.

Once a second is about as low as I would go on it. A bit faster would be better.

The Highway Code states, "Flashing lights are permitted but it is recommended that cyclists who are riding in areas without street lighting use a steady front lamp."

I haven’t actually had a seizure since I was 15. I am now 36. However I had ‘petit mals’ (not a seizure but small jolts or flutters) when I was around 18-19.
You can’t drive if you have had a seizure in the last 2yrs, hence why I said ‘over 2yrs’.

The cyclists need to have a light to make them visible on the roads and I assume that having the light flash is more helpful than having it steady. It’s the strobe flashes that are the problem. If you have photosensitive epilepsy and are driving along a dark road and strobe light starts cycling towards you, it’s not nice and also dangerous.

60-240 a minute seems a lot. I would definitely have a seizure if a light was flashing at a rate of 240 in front of my face. I know screens flash at a higher rate but because it's such a high rate, they appear steady.
