BBCFour are showing this at the moment and as I've never seen it before i thought I'd give it a go. It's the series with Glenda Jackson. The sets are a tad wobbly but the costumes are excellent and seem pretty spot on and the script is good too.

I'm sure there was also a series about Henry VIII in the 70s but I don't know what it was called. Hope they show that as well at some point unless I can find it elsewhere.

The sets and make-up are terrible by today's standards, has not aged well. This is what you're thinking of:

Thanks both
Henry VIII and his Six Wives, starring Keith Michell. It was in black and white so might be slightly earlier than the 70s.
the Keith Michel one I thought was quite good - historically

Our Glend - Elizabeth really is afraid her sister will cut her head off for heresy and converts - mary I is not taken in .... is really good

good bit where she sits on the dock and refuses to go into the Tower via the traitors gate - "my lady the guards will carry you..." - Princess is not used until 1760

and the scene where she is told shhe has succeeded - she really oes sit in a field reading a book at hatfield when she hears. And her jailer DOES say - my lady I hope you will not hold it against me
and she really does say
when I need someone to be held in close confinement, you are the first I will think of....

what a gal !
didn't Glenda Jackson shave the front of her hair for the right historical style?
The Keith Michell series was in colour. Jackdaw must have had a B&W television at the time.
yes
( shaved forehead)

they didnt show the archbishop of canterbury sacrificing one of his own teeth to show how painless it was, when the Queen had an abscess
but did show her death quite well - lay on cushions for three days and wouldnt go to bed
