Can't Sing, Can Whistle

An old relative of mine has a horrible singing voice. When my daughter was a tiny baby she would cry as soon as he started singing and would carry on until he stopped.
He can whistle beautifully, note perfect with a wide range.
Has anyone else experienced this? I would have thought you could either do both or neither.

This is something else I can't figure - I've seen many people do it but I don't know how. Do the splits and pull yourself back up. It confuddles me. Seen at around 1 minute 10 here,
