It must be over 33 years since we had a corner shop, I remember them as friendly one to one service

my mum used to talk about Spanish wood, some sort of liquorice stick that looked like wood.
I try and use our local independent shop when possible, yes a few pennies more than local supermarkets, but always have offers on wine and chocolates. Where else could you buy a sewing kit with 9 different coloured cottons, 10 needles, tape and scissors for £1.
Yes an Asian family own it and the family run it between themselves, but only place that delivers newspapers.
TTT - I think what you're talking about is a liquorice root. It looked like a piece of tree and you chewed it.
TTT; liquorice stick was just that! You must be much younger than you come across! I hated it; it had the liquorice taste but was musty and woody and turned into a fibrous wet mass that 'natives' might have used to brush their teeth with, but not me! Spanish was black and shiny, and either thick and leathery (penny spanish) or thin and brittle (Ha'pnny spanish which was used to dip into kali).
athiest, "You must be much younger than you come across! " - i was talking about my mum with Spanish wood, I am 58.

Urghhh, I so remember liquorice root, it was like eating a twig :0)
And Arkwright's With a Dopey Delivery boy on a bike.
TTT - that's the stuff. My daughter came across some a couple of years ago and got me some. It was just as horrible as I remembered it.

My wife worked in an "Arkwright's" when she first left school and I did stand-in Dopey Delivery Boy a couple of times. The owner was every bit as mean as Arkwright.
Can not think of the name of the delivery boy in Arkwright's

We had a shop here who did liquorice root and pineapple , ginger and black currant juice , all healthy extracts from the real thing, oh and Saspirella , that was in the 50s , all good healthy stuff
22.03 Thanks.
We have a corner shop. OH goes each morning for newspapers. Since Covid he got a bit nervy about using cash. So we decided we wanted to pay in advance by card for the following week. It was a bit difficult as they are all from the Phillipines and aren't very good with English. It took a while but he got there eventually.
We have a great one in the next village. And next to it is a fish chip shop and a takeaway curry shop!
I've given up on daily newspapers, apart from one on Saturday for TV and gardening guide.
There's a brilliant sweet shop in the market square in Masham N Yorks where you can get lots of the old sweets especially liquorice. It's quite famous.
bhg481 @ 22;03. Surely you mean G-G-G-Granville? :-)
