Not a lot I would have thought, except that a mansion is always large and a villa is sometimes quite modest.


A mansion may be in town or country - a villa is always suburban or rural

In Scotland, villa seems to be a generic term for all sorts of properties.

According to the Oxford English dictionary



villa

� noun 1 (especially in continental Europe) a large country residence in its own grounds. 2 Brit. a detached or semi-detached house in a residential district. 3 a rented holiday home abroad. 4 (in Roman times) a large country house, having an estate and consisting of buildings arranged around a courtyard.

� ORIGIN Latin.



mansion

� noun a large, impressive house.

� ORIGIN Latin, �place where someone stays�, from manere �remain�.



So it would seem that in some instances, they are the same thing
