its a drama ich, they have some licence with their stories.
Indeed. Who has ever heard of a dying declaration?
Dying declarations are real :)

It's a great show, can't wait for the new series
It is indeed real:

In the law of evidence, a dying declaration is testimony that would normally be barred as hearsay but may in common law nonetheless be admitted as evidence in criminal law trials because it constituted the last words of a dying person. The rationale is that someone who is dying or believes death to be imminent would have less incentive to fabricate testimony, and as such, the hearsay statement carries with it some reliability.
I’ve recently re-watched series 5 to get me up to speed. I wasn’t quite up to watching them all again.
Oh great! We loved this series. The only trouble is, remembering all previous story lines.
I wish we could read a synopsis of story so far!
Oh ok, did not know that! You learn something new every day as the saying goes :o)
To be fair tigger, it did seem like something made up!

(Very brief) synopsis of series 1-5 here.
You can find recaps of all episodes online too, if you have the time
Great, but thought Series 5 disappointing.
I found that the situation with Tommy Hunter in series 2 was unbelievable to the extent it slightly spoiled it.
Of course it may be the case that it’s happened before that witnesses would be allowed to roam at large in the community where they are known - and in any case Hunter is being “protected” by bent coppers, but it seemed unlikely.
As for dying declarations, I doubt they’d make that up
Patsy, you can read a synopsis using Wiki - to jump to the nexr series use the linmk on the right.
