passport runs out in less than 6 months

I am currently living in spain, but need to go back to the uk for a week and then return back to spain , I have less than 6 months left on my passport - does anyoneknow if this ok to travel, as I heard you had to have more than 6 months left on your passport to travel. I cant seem to find this info anywhere -

of course you can,but when you are here why not renew it ,you can do it in one day .
some countries require 6 months to make sure you're not going to overstay a visa, but you should be able to use it up to the last day in Britain itself and in Spain.

Pretty expensive to renew it in a day. (Costly enough to do it the standard way too, of course.)
You can use a current passport anywhere in the EU up to the expiry date.
A source I belive to be reliable says that Spain (and only Spain) will accept a UK passport up to a year out of date. Wouldn't want to try to convince an airline of this though but there should be no problem up to the last day of its validity and even after that you can reenter the UK with little or no hassle.

thanks for your answers - I will go ahead and book my flights now. I have found out I can renew my passport here, but costs �91.00 each - will have to start saving!
