You have to remain in control. This involves using your judgement. Can you call your dog back to you? Does your dog attack other dogs?

As I said, you have to use your judgement. If your dog is obedient, then you should be able to stay in control of it when it is off the lead.

It is up to you to decide. When walking my dog I consider things like :- will I be crossing a busy road, are there any other dogs close by, any very young children about, any cats about.

In the final analysis, you are ultimately responsible for anything that happens. To have your dog off the lead you need to feel you can trust it to do as you want.

its my dog i am concerned about . i just wondered if it is law to have a dog kept on a lead ot not. if not should it at least have an id tag on ?

As Colortec said if you can control your dog safley off its lead its ok to do so.

(The Control of Dogs Order (1992))

The Control of Dogs Order 1992 says that all dogs must wear a collar and an identity tag in a public place. The identity tag must show the name and address of the owner. You can be fined up to �5,000 for this offence. Your dog must still wear an identity tag even if it is microchipped.

Also don't forget the doggy bags!!!

It is not law, but you should as someone else said be in control of your dog. However, you do not know what may happen to frighten your dog, another dog may run out at him from behind a hedge and cause him to run into the road, or there may be a car backfire, or any number of things, so if you are anywhere near a road, keep it on a lead.

For those who use those evil pieces of equipment called flexileads, please keep them locked on the short length when near a road. I witnessed a dog being chased by another dog, and it ran in the road to the extent of its flexilead and got hit by a car and killed.

Absolutely if its in public not just for the sake of humans but for the dogs themselves, to avoid being run over, tormented, lost etc etc and the humans should be on a lead at ALL times

I must have got it wrong then, because I thought it was law to keep your dog on a leash in public places other than a park ( as you say, if you can trust your dog). I didn't think you could walk along street/road etc off a lead. Although I have seena couple.

i use a flexilead with my min pin as i only let him off at my dads house in the country but i always keep it locked short near roads or i use the the short lead if not going to the park.thats awful to hear about the dog who got run over on the flexi lead :(

I agree with the flexilead. I use one, but both my dogs get freacked by motocycles. I have to be on my guard at all times and keep their lead shorter on pathways. They are great in the park if you don't want to let your dogs off the lead. Especially for small dogs.

Some local authorities have local dog control orders. This means they can require you to keep dogs on leads in certain areas, but there are usually notices to that effect.

This can also be the case in certain areas of parks or other public places, or beaches.

Some places like forestry land or national parks may have their own bylaws too.
