My sister a professional singer at the time worked with him. She still shudders at the memory. He was a very nasty individual indeed. Karma claimed him up until his sordid demise.
Freddie had his moments but have to agree with Dagman, Ken Dodd was, for me, the greatest . I took my children to see him several times because I knew he was 'safe' for them. He wasn't kidding when he joked about being a long show, his first half was longer than most shows. Talk about value for money.
I went to a live Ken Dodd show at Bridlington. He was funny for about 1/2 hour then just got tedious. After about 2 hours I felt trapped & would have walked out if we hadn't been seated in the middle of a row. You can have too much of a good thing!

I know it's not PC but Bernard Manning never failed to make me laugh.

I'm the same, and I always thought, a I was laughing like a drain - I am a horrible human being for finding this funny, but reaction to humour is not something you can control

Andy, I'm exactly the same with Frankie Boyle :-( :-) :-(
Time moves on, depending on how old you are of course. Looking back on what I used to see funny seems dreadful now, and almost embarrassing to watch. Coming away from stand alone comics, even comedy sketches/ shows, old ones are dreadful to watch.
For instance if you watch some of the two Ronnies now, there just plane boring. The only two I find still funny now are, one foot in the grave, and only fools and horses. At a push for stand alone Dave Allen
Best stand up comedian Ken Dodd
Best comic duo Morecambe & Wise.
Yep, forgot about Ken Dodd, but you needed to be mighty quick to catch his jokes, sometimes he would have told two more while you were still working out the first one.
I think most comedians agree that Bob Monkhouse was the king of stand up. He had books full of jokes & thousands of hours of TV that he recorded from several TVs around his home. Never stuck for a quip.
but I think even he was a bit blue in live shows.
