discs don't play on dvd player

i have some mpeg layer3 files which i have burned to cd-r which play fine onwindows media player but won't play on anything else including my dvd player. I also tried to put them on a dvd but it did not recognise the files so i had to burn it as data. This also played on windows but on nothing else. I know my dvd player will play cd-r's and dvdr's so what am i doing wrong. please help.

Well, burn it in audio mode, not mp3 mode.

Will your dvd player play cd-r's with mp3s dropped straight on or will it play cd-r's as a VCD? If it does say it plays MP3 CDs, try renaming all the tracks on the disc (filenames) to 001.mp3, 002.mp3, etc, and make sure you're burning in ISO whatever (lower setting) and not Joliet. This is how you'd have to do it for a mp3 walkman.
