Why do players have to wear all that protective gear for a glorified game of rounders

Comparing MLB to rounders is ridiculous. I think that Pasta might agree with me when I say that there seems to be an undercurrent of Yankee batting, I mean bashing, in this thread.

Smithsonian tv channel USA is full of huge baseball arenas for thousands of spectators - to watch american rounders! Same for UK netball = USA basketball. Girly games played by men over the pond ;)

cricket balls almost all bounce, which slows them down (but can make them deviate in direction). I doubt any deliveries hit the bat at more than 70mph.

Air resistance slows down cricket balls and baseballs alike.
