The RFU is changing the A team name from Saxons back to A team, because it might offend someone. Who? the Picts, Danes, Normans?
And they are distancing themselves from the England anthem, Swing Low. I really don’t understand this. It’s an anti-slavery hymn. Who on earth in these days would be offended by this.

Can you regulars explain why you have turned this into a discussion about LBGT when the original question was solely about the RFU male teams having the name changed and backing off Swing Low as an anthem. Start your own LGBT thread.

What's wrong with being a Saxon? I read that it is considered discriminatory - but isn't it discriminatory to go against one racial group? If it were called Anglians, Yorkshiremen, Lancastrians or Celts or Welsh or English or Scottish or Irish would all of them be considered racist?

More likely the players who might aspire to, or do, play for the side who aren't of Anglo-Saxon heritage. "English", yes, "Saxon", no. Saxons is exclusive whereas England A is not.

Than you folks. we are an immigrant nation. 14000ish years ago we were under 3 km of ice and uninhabited. Since then as the ice melted, peoples have established settlements in Britain and Ireland. I don't follow RFU's removal of the Saxon title. Should Scotland FA ask Celtic to change their name. The Scots are no more Celtic then the English, Welsh or Irish. What is the RFU reason and who was upset?

You can be English without being of Saxon heritage. They've decided that calling the team "Saxons" implies that only Anglo Saxons are welcome, whereas calling the team England A implies that all English people are welcome.
