Fourteen solutions need to be partially amended before entry into the grid in a consistent manner by undergoing either a hundredfold increase or a hundredfold decrease. Resulting grid entries are not real words. Definitions in these clues refer to the original solution, while the wordplay and numbers are for the amended form.
Am completely baffled by 4D: Ancient Greek city winning over the Spanish (5). I thought that the definition might be PULOS (up = winning (over)) and los = the in Spanish, but JJ109 says this is a thematic clue and I cannot, for the life of me, find the currencies to swap or, indeed find PULOS as a Greek city anyway (Pylos and Pilos, but not Pulos). Can anyone help please?
Would be really grateful as this is the only one I can't get. Many thanks all.
NB I was telling you to be careful because the definition of POLIS is an ancient Greek city, and without knowing it was a thematic answer having the letters P _ L _ S, you may not have gone any further than Polis. Sorry if I may have confused you.
Thank you so much, this was doing my head in!! I looked at Thebes as the city, but got so bogged down with Pulos that I didn't even think to look at a thebe as a currency.
