Have just been talking to my brother on the phone.
He was telling me how he's been having difficulty remembering names, and he doesn't think it's because he is actually 84 yrs old in a few months!!
So he phoned me for some help and told me the woman he was trying to remember was the Queen of country.
I'm not very good at knowing names of country singers so I couldn't help him, but, it then came to him and he said, Taylor Swift and I said WHAT.
I always considered her to be a pop artist as I know a lot of young people are fans of hers.
Is he right, is she really the Queen of country?
//There are a few current princesses like Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift but if we consider living female country performers then there are three ladies that would be in the running as the Queen of Country Music -- Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn and Reba McEntire.//
Dolly Parton springs immediately to mind, as does Crystal Gayle. If you want to include singers no longer with us, then, as Brian said, Kitty Wells is worth a mention, as are both Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette.
I must admit I can only name 1 song of Taylor Swifts and that is Shake It Off, which I wouldn't class as Country.
Do you know of country songs that she sings?
Barsel, Taylor started off as a proper country singer, but she moved into pop soon after that. Having said that, her last two (really rather good) albums were firmly of the folk/pop genre.
She's has won 11 Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award, 32 American Music Awards (most wins by an artist), 25 Billboard Music Awards (most wins by a female artist), 35 Guinness World Records, 12 Country Music Association Awards (including the Pinnacle Award), eight Academy of Country Music Awards, and two Brit Awards. As a songwriter, she has been honoured by the Nashville Songwriters Association and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
I'd never call myself a fan, but she writes her own stuff, and is a capable musician, playing both acoustic guitar and piano on many of her songs. She's a pretty good example of a modern singer songwriter. Perhaps the natural heiress to the likes of Stevie Nicks and Dolly Parton.
Reba McEntire is currently known as The Queen Of Country Music. I just heard a podcast interview (The PJRchive) with her in which she is referred to that way in the introduction
