Stupid film question!

Dear all
This is a bit hopeless but hey, nothing ventured nothing gained, right?! My partner was trying tonight to remember a film that he believes he saw in the mid 90s. This is all I can give you -
There were 3 main female characters
1 was definitely black
He thinks it was Whoopi Goldberg, or someone similar
One of them was dying of some kind of illness
Basically I think the plot summay was something like, they were friends as children, or at college, or highschool friends or something, and then they lost touch, and then they met in later life when this person wanted to reunite them in order to tell them that they were sick. I guess it was a kind of 'appreciating the important things' kind of film, I don't think it was a box office smash, it might even have been a made for TV thing that most of us have not seen. Does ANYONE out there have the faintest idea of what we might be talking about?!
Sorry that I can't give any more information. It's just quite important, because he said to me tonight that there was this speech in the film that was incredibly poignant, and made him cry, and I/we would really like to find out what this film is/was, so we could see it together!
If anyone has any ideas, or potential places we could look to find out info, please let me know. We have traw;ed the imdb website which is pretty good, but somehow cannot find a match for us.
Thanks everyone for your help.
