I don;t for one moment believe that anyone who would inflict this level of abuse on a baby has the mental capacity to assess the seriousness of his actions, and the potential results were he to be caught and convicted.

That makes the notion of 'deterrent' utterly meaningless.

Deterrents are for people who consider what they do, see what has happened to others in similar circumstances, and decided that the action is not worth the potential punishment.

How much of that thought process is liable to be available to the brain of someone who does someething like this?
