Microsoft Authenticator Problem

Updated Windows this morning on my desktop and had to use Authenticator on my mobile. Code received promptly, tapped the one matching my screen and had to enter my device log in passcode.
It would not accept it - I entered it multiple times and it just keep asking for it again. I deliberately entered the wrong code and it told me it was wrong so that was not the problem.
In the end I had to use my password on my PC which is okay but not ideal, I like the idea of 2FA.
Any clues as to how to solve this next time?
