Hornet or something else

The other week I saw what I thought was a Hornet but looking at a few pictures on line..it would appear to not be a Hornet, unless there are different types of Hornet. Maybe its not a Hornet at all.

It was bigger in overall size than a Bee or bumble bee it was certainly bigger than a standard wasp although it was shaped more like a wasp than a bee

But apart from the size which made it stand out, its face markings were very clear. It had one thick yellow stripe down its face, down the middle and the two big black 'eyes' either side of it. No other face markings. It even had a slight yellow tinge on its wings...although this could have been pollen but do wasps/hornets even eat pollen?

Any idea exactly what this was ?
