I could see he had AIDS. I recognised that look as I saw it so many times. Terribly sad that it was all before the disease became manageable.

Not at all - i found out like everyone else, from reading the music papers, which were on general sale, and watching the TV, which was available to anyone with a licence.

Let's not pursue this shall we? You advise you were shocked, I advised I wasn't - does it really matter?

Indeed - so many people die from diseases that become non-fatal through scientific endevour, simply because by an accident of birth, they were bornb too early to benefit.

The fact that there was no new footage of Freddie in the video for "The Show Must Go On" made it pretty much an open secret. I wasn't particularly surprised when I heard the news that he had AIDS, but certainly was when I heard only the day after that he had dies.

Andy, had you actually said that his death "hadn't come as a shock to me" in your 1850 post, i would have left it there. Thought you were suggesting i was naive, or something :-)

I think his ill health became apparent to most of the country on February 18, 1990, the night the 11th Brit Awards took place. And for anyone with an ounce of common sense, the reason was manifestly clear...

The person that told me Freddie was dying also went on to die of AIDS. Thing is, regardless of medical breakthroughs, nobody knew that they could be protected by practicing safe sex. I went into work one morning and and about 10 people had died. They would be alive now if they knew.

I did have an idea that Freddie was seriously ill but his passing was still a shock.

That's tragic.

The ignorance and stigma then was dreadful to behold, and as you say, many died who would have lived if they had known more about what was going on.
