Motorcycle chain

I have a chain to fit to a motorcycle. It has a break in it where I need to fit a link. I have the link which consists of a plate with two pins, four seals and a side plate. The pins are not hollow and there is no retaining clip. How do I stop the side plate from coming off?

they can be expensive to buy if you intend to use it only a couple of times,can you borrow one???

I think you may have the type of link that is to be riveted ( end of the pins riveted over to retain the plate) perhaps you'd be better getting a spring-clip link. Info on riveting is here, http://www.nobugs.org/bike/chain.html

Spring links are not always safe, most m/cycle chains are now riveted.

The link you have with the end plate and two pins has a slightly softer steel in the pins which means it can be riveted.

This can be done by holding a lump hammer behind this link and using a ball peen hammer to hit the end of the pins gently and precisley to rivet it together. I do mine like this but if you do not feel confident to do this a m/cycle mech will do the job in about 5 minutes.

The four seals are to be fitted before doing this as oil seals and to stop grit getting into the chain.
