Telegraph Linked In Puzzle For This Week

Good evening,
Would someone give me an idea as to how a Linked in Puzzle works? I have never done any before and would like to learn to solve it. Here is this week’s Linked in from the Telegraph. The answer and parsing to one of the 9 given words would be appreciated to get me started. Thanks in advance!

In our Linked In puzzle, each clue is an anagram of a linked word or phrase, together with a spare letter. The spare letters can be rearranged to give a related surname.

1 looks like PENALTIES (with 'u' left over)
2 looks to be YELLOW CARD (with 'h' left over) - so the theme appears to be football.
All of the extra letters should give an anagram of someone connected to football (but I haven't done any similar puzzles).

Matakari, I don't think it'll take much 'learning' - the explanatory paragraph is very ... explanatory! The puzzle itself os maybe a bit one-dimensional for many solvers.

Yes, Professor, I’ve been following the Euro 2020 very assiduously and rooting for England, so when you suggested the theme was football, I had no difficulty finding the three lions who were still roaring in my head. A big deception, though, as I do not understand how the guys let victory slip through their legs!

I think the manager's search for a fairy-tail ending had a lot to do with the slippage.

I agree with you, Professor, it's so sad that Southgate would send a few youngsters ( perhaps not psychologically ready) in at the last moment to do a job demanding greater experience! But no use crying over spilt milk now!
