I cant see how 9d links to any of the three shortened versions of the name? Can someone please put me out of my misery. Nor the link between 14a and 34a where presumably the second word is hammer?

9 D is listed in Chambers under the definition of one of the shortened words(the one with the sporting equipment and 16 D too).

It's taken me a while to find out where I got 14 A/34 A from. It's listed, given under a five-letter version of the theme word, a version I'd say isn't very common! Still, it covers 10/16 and 19 too.
