Cork & Blarney Stone

I'm visiting Cork in December and have always wanted to kiss the legendary Blarney Stone. But i've been looking at pics and information online that says you have to lie down and have someone hold you while you learn back and out. Why do you have to kiss the bottom? Can you not just learn forward and kiss the top? I want to do it, but dont want the big rigmarole.

The rigmarole is due to the stone's position. But it's not difficult, honest!

btw, re your other post, you really are better off hiring a car, relying on buses will severely restrict what you can do.
