I went to put something in the indoor food bin. When i opened the lid, dozens of maggots tried to crawl out. Horrendous, I had to get OH to deal with it. I suppose it's a combination of hot weather and lots of flies.

So what do you do with your food waste, naomi?

I feed a neighbouring farm's chickens with it, ellie - but before there were chickens to feed I wrapped everything securely in newspaper before binning it. Nothing that's likely to encourage flies goes into my dustbin without being thoroughly wrapped and put into a plastic bag which is then tied securely.

I'm proud to say I use our kitchen waste recycling collection. Food waste that is put into landfill degrades anaerobically, giving off methane which contributes to climate change.

If done carefully it is hygienic.

If I can't compost food scraps I put them in a lined tub in my freezer, then put them in the bin just before the binmen are due.

Food waste has to go somewhere.
Far better in a food waste bin than an ordinary bin, which won’t stop flies laying their eggs any more then anywhere else.

Birds like maggots, when we got some in our big bin I turned it on its side on the grass. Sparrows loved it.

I have always tipped them into the lawn and while I cleaned the bin let the birds pick out the maggots then swept up what's left, rebagged it and then given that area of grass a good wash down and a brush. Such a shame to waste live food especially when small songbirds have been struggling

My food waste is inedible - meat and fish bones, fish guts, that sort of thing.

We got out food bins originally, during summer- and they pretty much started off with maggots. Now, it just goes in the black bin, which is outside and lidded, so nothing indoors.

Yes, the hot weather makes food rot faster. I wrap my waste food in two bags to keep everything inside. Why not but it in two or three bags to keep it where it is.

We seldom have any food waste. Empty plate, always.
Those council food bins are gross. Lost ours years ago.

Anyone who has space in their freezer should freeze food waste until bin day during hot weather. No need for lots of plastic bags to keep the flies out.
