Get an air conditioner or suffer with the rest of us as we melt away... ;)
Put some ribbon on the fan blade ( don’t ask me why ,I’ve just seen it )
Soreeee Sandy :0(
Do as they do in hot countries. Close the curtains or blinds and keep the heat out during the day.
Get a bowl of ice and put it in front of the fan.
Similar but freeze a few bottles of water and stand them in front of the fan.
Nicely cool her now, however to answer the question:-
Shut south facing windows as soon as the sun gets around there.
Draw curtains on those windows.
Use electric fan on full.
Make a lot of ice cubes and use them in drinks.

I think where you are going wrong is 'open windows'. If there is one thing (I learned lots) from living in France it is to keep the heat out by shutting the windows, drawing curtains etc..

Shutters are really good for this, but so few days in UK warrant shutters. If it continues to get hot then we shall revert to French 'cave-man' existence. It works, certainly up to about 38 degrees C.
I've got to remember to fully close my bedroom curtains each night...I generally have them open. My room faces east and it's been like a furnace recently.

I haven't read it because I am just going out and I am supposed to be hurrying.☺
As others have said don't open doors and windows that lets the hot air in. Close the curtains. Follow the ice advice. That's you sorted Sandy:-)
My place faces roughly east-west. I close the curtains on the sunny side & open the windows on the shady side. Don't get the midday sun at all. Not used the fan yet.
Saw this and thought of you, sandy:

//The term Glasshouse became military slang for all Armed Forces prisons after originally referring to the military prison at Aldershot, that had a glazed glass roof //

Just so you know!
