capitalism and financial spending
if the nurse get a 3% pay rise
and the pensioners get 8 %

both the nurses and the pensioners will have more money to spend
both the nurses and some pensioners will have to pay more tax and national insurance

when spending the money they will be paying more tax and paying more people for more services

the money does not go anywhere does it ?

just round and round making rich people richer but then that money will eventually trickle
down the system won't it ?

we are one of the richest countries on the planet
ok most of us would like more and some of us are quite happy with what they've got

how would giving nurses or teacher a living wage be any hardship of the governments finances ?

Nurses & teaches GET a living wage in most parts of the country it's the imbalance between London & parts of the SE and the rest of the country that's the problem.

"the money does not go anywhere does it ?"

If that were the case the likes of Jeff Besoz, Bill Gates, Richard Branson and numerous Russian oligarchs wouldn't be jetting off to space & cruising about in $million yachts.

but all that stuff costs lots of money so the people who build the yachts and the people who crew the yacht get money they would not otherwise have got
So if the Gov increased all benefits & pensions and the minimum wage so that everyone got at least the average pay whether they are working or not that would not impact public finances? Sounds like a good plan.
Basically the goverment has no-one of its own and has to borrow even more on top of the many many billions of debt and pay interest indefinitely leaving less to pay pensioners and nhs next year jonny
Theres also inflation. The more money the gov gives out can give a tempory boost but means demand increases and prices go up as supply cant keep up so nobodies any better off
National Insurance contributions cease when you reach state pension age.
I know they are flavour of the month but nurses (and teachers) most certainly do get a living wage these days. A lot more than many other decent people who had to work through the pandemic.
I suppose the nurses might wilfully decide to to keep some of their pay rise under the mattress rather than running out and buying Porsches, thus undermining the economy.
I agree that nurses get a good living wage- not up on teachers, so I don't know. There are still a few professions that don't, imv.
Yes, rich people's money often goes "somewhere". But, I would like homeless people and those who "really" need it, to be benefited instead.
I think without serious restraint we could head down the same path as Zimbabwe - you would need a wheelbarrow to carry enough money to buy a loaf of bread!
