A Restaurant Ettiquette Question

When we are dining out with friends, and I have a steak, or an Italian, I usually order a basket of bread and butter.

My wife then says I should offer the bread around to the other diners at our table.

I disagree - I ordered the bread for me to eat with my meal, and if anyone else wants bread they are welcome to do the same.

I would not assume that someone else's basket was for sharing, and expect to be offered some.

This has caused an argument, and we both think we are in the right - what do others think?

AH, your question is about etiquette. It’s in your heading. The entire premise of etiquette is not that people may differ on their views. There are wrong ways - and there’s a right way.

Surely if there is any doubt, it's nicer to be polite and ask everyone? You can always order more.

Naomi, etiquette may be linked to the French word for a label. It was not considered good etiquette to spoon your soup from front bowl to back bowl until VR did it, then they all jumped on the bandwagon. If she'd dribbled it down her front and then splashed the remains over her neighbour to the left, then that would have been considered a label of correct royal behaviour. I think politeness is more important.
