At work i had a book nearby i had been reading, about the battle of Trafalgar. A young man in the office asked if Trafalgar is in America and i was shocked. Am i expecting too much to expect the young to know the major stories of our history?.

It's not that you are expecting too much from the young, you are probably expecting too much from everyone. Just because you know about Trafalgar doesn't mean to say everybody does. We didn't all go to a good school and get a good education or even teach ourselves things if we weren't interested in them. I didn't know the battle of Peterloo happened in...

//Perhaps, with the best will in the World, a very crowded National Curriculum cannot hope to touch on every historic happening in detail.//
Not everything can be blamed on schools, I never learned about Trafalgar at school but 21st October is Trafalgar Day and it was in 1805 off Cape Trafalgar, southern Spain. Education offers the ability to read and gain information not a list of facts.
As Cicero said: “To be ignorant of what occurred before you were born is to remain always a child"
I much prefer Henry Ford's quote, 10CS, "History is bunk" ;-)
The Battle of Barnet was the penultimate battle in the War of the Roses, which enabled Edward IV to regain the throne. Incidentally, the War of the Roses was never referred to as such until the mid 19th century. Before that it was generally called the Cousins' War.
But he is now history, isn't he Chris? Maybe he thought it wouldn't happen to him. :o)
all they teach in history these days is how bad the British were and we should apologise to everyone.
What a load of rubbish, TTT.
Hey Chris what about the battle of Jenkins ear.....heard about it?:-)
Now then, don't go down playing poor Jenkins - War if you please.
Read about it in The Listener.
^^^ Not a battle, David, but a lengthy war:

I remember it being mentioned in history lessons at school but, until I just googled it, I couldn't have told you a great deal about it!

History (of the formal dates, battles, kings, queens and Acts of Parliament sort) definitely isn't my best subject, although I love social history (i.e. learning about the lives of ordinary people in years gone by).

Over the years, I've sat numerous examinations and tests. Although I might have had to re-sit a few of them at times (such as my driving test), I've always passed them eventually. There's just one exception to that statement: I never passed my O-level History exam ;-)
As a boy, i lived just off Trafalgar Street in Burnley. There were quite a few pubs along this particular street, one of which was The Trafalgar. At one end of the street we had The Nelson and at the other end, The Waterloo. And, for some reason (if i remember rightly) there was also The Malekof?
