Mark Knopfler (dammit, I'll spell it right even if no-one else does) has the perfect voice for the style of music he makes. Could you imagine anyone else singing Private Investigations or Romeo & Juliet? It just wouldn't sound right. Same can be said for Chris Rea. Must be something in that North East air.

Exactly, he's simply a fantastic musician. Aside from that, there are far worse 'singers' in the music trades. If you can't get past his vocals (not that I understand why) you're missing out, IMO.
