I know he's Lional Messi and all, but a five year contract for a 34 year old seems ridiculous.
You'll probably find that his new contract will involve him taking exams to gain coaching certs that will enable him to get a job as a coach or manager at a football club when he finally hangs up his boots.
Lionel will still be a spring chicken at 39 ...

Sir Stanley was still playing for England at 42 and in the First Division (when it really was the First Division) at 50 :

He's not saying that he's hard done by, nor is anyone else.

Dont worry tomus it was meant to be tongue in cheek.
///Sir Stanley was still playing ... at 50 ///

I saw him play (for Stoke City) in 1962 at Carrow Road (he was then 47) and the old Matthews Magic was still there. It was exciting for me to see such a legend playing.
Is any footballer, or indeed anyone at all, really worth £1,000,000 per week?
football has become ridiculous
Can't blame Messi. If PSG are willing to pay him that much, he'd be a complete twonk to turn it down.
The link in the OP is dated 15th. July. Things have moved on since then.
So , who is the highest paid footballer ?
Tilly, i believe that besides myself, both davebro and MWG14 are well aware that Messi is now a PSG player and it is they who are said to be paying him £1M per week.
In answer to your question Baz, Messi was already the world's highest paid footballer even before his move to PSG.
Ken the OP is about him taking a pay cut. It doesn't make sense.
Yes, Tilly, but that was a couple of weeks ago when he was still with Barcelona. They are so cash-strapped (believe it or not) that he was being asked to take a pay cut. According to the player himself, he actually offered to cut his wages by half. The problem at Barca is that, even without Messi, their wage bill is 95% of their income, which exceeds the limit set by the Spanish FA. They need to bring that down to 70%!
As i said earlier, he is now in France at PSG.
I know Ken.

I have just noticed the date on the OP, so I'll shut up now.
We were all shocked when Trevor Francis became the first £1 million player.

The world has gone even madder. Jack Grealish for £100 million!

The present Mrs Hughes is delighted to have been taken to Sir Stanley's final game at Stoke-s Victoria Ground - it ignited a passion for football in general, and Stoke City in particular, that lasts to this day.

She now attends home games with two of our grandsons, season ticket holders all.
I took Mrs. Blank to see Brazil (and Pele) play in the 70's. She loved it, bless her.
