Reoccurring Holes In Lawn

We keep getting holes on our lawn that seem too run in lines. We have moles regularly and know the tell tale sign of earth mounds on the surface but these holes do not have that.
The holes and troughs between them can be a good 8/9 inches deep and holes can be 2 inches + across.
Have lived here 19 years and never seen this before. We do have rats but the open troughs can have up holes coming up every 6 inches or so, not like normal rat holes
