Ringo's first solo album, Sentimental Journey, had a photo of the pub at the end of the street where he used to live on the cover. The pub is called "The Empress" and its sign shows an ocean liner with two funnels. Was there ever an ocean liner called "Empress"? All that I have found by googling is Empress of this and Empress of that. Thaks.
Thanks, both of you. It looks as though the illustration on the pub sign was a work of the imagination. The two funnels have black at the top, above a sort of orangey-yellow, which could have been red when it was first painted. It looks most like the Empress of Britain (or of Ireland, its sister ship). The painted image has a name on the bow, which is too blurred in my photo to read, but the real Empress didn't have a name on the bow.
