While I sympathise with anyone who tested positive for covid, what about the 1000s of people who have travelled down, booked hotels etc, or the food and drink vendors who have spent small fortunes on fresh stock to last 5 days, will there be any compensation.

Sorry, just to clarify, I meant compensation for the players who did travel and were forced to isolate, rather than the ones who are suspended for pulling out.
according to Dinesh Karthik, the tipping point was losing their only physio, which sounds reasonable to me. They got together four months ago; they've still got the IPL coming up, then the T20 world cup, then a South Africa tour, all this year. I'm not surprised they don't want to go into a game without full physio backup.

Weirdly, nobody seems to have considered this possibility in advance, and the ECB haven't insured against Covid cancellation (despite a series with SA haveing been wiped out late last year).
They're talking about it on Radio 5 right now. There seems to be a fair chance of it being rescheduled, perhaps during the Indians limited overs tour here next year.
yes, the BCCI offered that this morning. The thing is the ECB also have millions of pounds riding on this, so they desperately need a declaration that the match was forfeited. (In fact they made this declaration themselves, then hastily withdrew the claim.)
I was visiting a wheelchair-bound, feisty, 93-yr-old Yorkshire lady this afternoon. She has family who have used up days of holiday, booked rooms etc.. First thing as I sat down she came out with anger at the cancellation. Many cogent reasons why the match should have gone ahead - why, she demanded, if the team is OK, can't they play?

Seriously, it is serious and important that these things carry on. She said it was all money and a few other choice things. Listen, this lady was head of the local W.I. for years and amongst those who slow-clapped Blair.

So apart from the disappointment, unnecessary expense, wasted time and sheer anger at the 'kow-towing to stupid rules' when they are all vaccinated - I assume. I there a reason?

The Test series should be voided. Captains, players and selectors work on 5 matches and decisions are made on that basis. I rather tend to agree with my indomitable old friend. She lives in constant pain and T.V. is her escape; she loves cricket.
To newjudge Watching the programme all sports equipment especially shoes have to be cleaned of soil particles etc before entering NZ or Australia. There are special areas for this and assistance is given by agriculture inspectors. I think they have to assist with this
Agree with Sunny Dave and Michael Vaughan - this is the wrong side of cricket Capitalism.....boycott the IPL all we England (and Indian) fans....not that we will, especially those from the sub-continent.
remarkably, English cricketers are just as keen as Indian ones to maximise their income before they have to retire in their 30s, so they'll be relaxing ahead of the IPL as well. There seem to be a good dozen of them in this year's line-up, and they'll all be better cricketers for the experience

Have we had - it is all about moolah !
Moolah is a Hindi word innit ( ness-par, mush kidder)

and boys and gurlz - on a contract - I bought a ticket and have lost - - do we count consequential loss - train tickets not used, hotels not stayed in?

and reputational damage

I was quite surprised that this wasnt taken into account by the players.

Then I don't blame the Indians at all. I thought it might be part of those countries' paranoid reaction to the pandemic but on investigation I find they have been doing it for years. Anyway it doesn't matter too much because our Antipodean friends have largely cut themselves off from the rest of the world in their efforts to achieve the impossible status of "zero Covid."
mmm no cucumber sandwiches on the lawn, rounders more fun lol
I know what you mean. There is compensation if there is no or some play due to rain but i do not know about a cancelled match. One opinion is that being close to the time of the IPL the Indians were happy to have it cancelled.
how were the crowd at the abandoned "George Davis is Innocent" test at Headingley in 1976 treated? did they get their money back?
