Rightio, my colleague has 6 points on her licence., She has just gone to court (friday) and received another 6, which is an automatic disqualification. Her previous 6 points were due to come off next May. Does that mean that her ban finishes in May and she then only has a new set of 6 points on her licence??
Cheers in advance

No.

She will have been told how long the disqualification is for.

Once you get 12 points and your licence is taken away then when you get it back there are no points on there, just a note of whatever it is you did.

Brilliant - thats what I thought - its just that she's going to her boss and telling her that she will only be banned until May. Totally threw me!! Thank you
a friend of mine drove on 14 points, he said hed loose his job if he got a ban, dont know y but judge said u can carry on driving,he is a taxi driver, dont know if it makes any change to the law.
Madman: no, you're occupation does not "make any change to the law". However, if you are facing a ban 1) get a good brief, 2) explain fully the detrimental effect a ban will have on your life (especially if it means job loss & subsequent hardship, i.e. your taxi mate) & 3) pray for a very understanding magistrate.
Although common, they do not disqualify everybody under "totting-up" (hitting 12 points or more). But! They often look at it & think "Well, if your licence is that important to you & you already had 6 / 9 points (whatever) then why did you speed / drive like an idiot (whatever it was that caused you to be stood before them!)"
Assuming this is a first set of "totting" points, she will have been automatically banned for 6 months.
6 months from when the ban started the ban ends but she will have to ask DVLA for her licence back. The points tally will be 0, but the endorsements will still be on the licence. (DVLA don't send it back automatically)
However, next time she tots up to 12, the ban will be longer.
