I get called and call myself skinny all the time and it never bothers me. But many websites say skinny is more negative than slim for example. If true, then why is skinny negative and slim positive?

Is skinny a step beyond slim?
So many questions, so few answers.
Depends of the context in which it's being used. Same as "fat", if it's being used to mock or body shame somebody, it's not appropriate, if it's just used in conversation: "They're a bit skinnier that I thought" etc, I can't see the harm. People are oversensitive nowadays.
You've managed to insult me without trying Mozz.
Sob sob.
Awww shut your cakehole skinny! ;-)
Because I'm rather thin
Or my cakehole works overtime?
I'm confused
I dunno mate, I'm making it up as I go along. No-one is likely to call me skinny, I know that much!
I guess it depends on the persons personal perception of the word. To me slim means you don’t have any extra weight and you’re just right for your height - totally in proportion. Skinny means you don’t have a scrap of extra weight on you and can’t really afford to lose any more weight. That’s just my personal opinion of the meaning.
me neither,
that was to Mozz
Ha ha, I'd blow away in a stiff breeze.
I have a problem trying to hide behind a telegraph pole!
