Maybe it is 'archeologist' as that is the Old English spelling

So glad I am not the only one frustrated as hell with this question! Knowing the compilers mainly use Chambers I will be surprised and disappointed if the answer is archeologist as that is very much a spelling afterthought in Chambers. I prefer egyptologist but am far from convinced but as Mamyalynne says plenty of time to keep musing!

Agreed, this is the one which is driving me crazy. I don't like the alternative spelling of archeologist at all but it feels a better fit for the definition than Egyptologist. The link to old housing can work if you stretch things a little... archeo meaning old/ancient and logis being the french for lodgings/housing. As I said a stretch so I'd be very happy if someone can lead me in a better direction. Still doesn't make sense to me though that the answer is not 13 letters.
