Making An Iphone Ringtone From Song In I Tunes
having had some problems syncing i tunes on my laptop to a new iphone i finally reloaded all my cd's and now have all the music on the iphone. i want to make one of my songs into a ringtone and have googled the iphone help/discussions and have followed the instructions to the letter but after choosing the info/options after right clicking on the song, and choosing the start and stop times (no more than 40 seconds as recommended), the song then appears at the top of the playlist, but not in the shortened version, just a repeat of the original song length. have tried this several times and ended up with about 6 versions of the song. i am clearly doing something wrong but for the life of me cannot work out what.

It 'makes' the ringtone like how you've described, you then plug the phone into itunes, let it up load then drag the edited song into the ringtones section on itunes, then you can sync the iphone.
Does that make sense? There is a YouTube tutorial, I'll see if I can find it.

The problem is that in iTunes the option to choose a 30 or 40 second clip from a song appears not to be working. So I never get to the point of changing the format of it. All that happens is that a repeat of the song appears at the top of the playlist lasting as long as the original song. For some reason the clip is not being extracted and I don't know why.
Just found this. It might help

I am doing this on a PC and thanks for the links which lead to the instructions i am already following. when i choose the start and stop time, then click on the song and create AAC version, the song that then appears under the original one is not a short clip, it is exactly the same length of the original song. when i go back to the song i can see that it says incomplete, but then immediately makes another copy of the song but rather than the clip the copy is the same length. i am following the instructions in the links to the letter but something is simply not working
taking another look at what i am doing, it appears that when i go into get info and try to change the start and stop times, the start time can be whatever i want it to be but the stop time is always the end time of the song. even if i change it, it immediately changes itself back to the end time of the song. even if i try to put in the last 40 seconds of a song, the copied version comes out as the original song, minus the 40 seconds. what on earth is happening here.
