I looked out my window at 6.15am this morning and there was a fox in the adjoining field behind my house. It was only about 100yds away but I've never been so close to a fox before and to see it sniffing peacefully around the field was really beautiful! I loved the fact that it didn't know it was being watched and was just doing its own thing for about 15 mins before bouncing back into the little wood. I know it sounds silly and maybe childish, but I wanted to give it a name but can't tell what sex it is.... X

Thanks... extremely thoughtful and original.... how very creative! ;oD
in the middle ages, foxes were generically known as Reynard. In my part of town the little beasts stroll past you about 10 feet away, as unconcerned as a cat, off to use someone's lawn as their toilet no doubt.
Bushy?
Vulpes ?
Oooh... call it Volpone! (pron. Vol-pony). I saw the play years ago and think of it whenever I see a fox:-

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volpone
What about "Seren" that means star in Welsh would suit either and he/she is a star
Basil .
call it Vermin, if you kept chickens they would all be dead now and the fox might take one for food but it would kill the rest for fun, my son went to bury a dead cat that had been knocked down out on the main road the the night, a police car pulled up and asked him what he had in his bag, my son told the policeofficer who did not believe him and asked to look, my son says the officer was nearly sick. The
officer told my son he should have left it for the foxes, my son told him that foxes hunt for live animals not dead ones, I think urban foxes have got clever, if they can't find a kitten or a baby rabbit they settle for the bins. People put norices up for missing cats all the time, do they not think that the cunning fox has not adapted to live amongst us pet loving humans for a reason?
you shouldn't be letting cats rule the nieghbourhood!

They are just as much of a threat to my precious birds
as any fox!

hey you better not be directing that comment at me! Just because I understand the hierarchy of the urban nightlife does not give you the right to second guess my integrity or stance on such issues. I was brought up on a farm, we lost stock to foxes, but we did not give permission for those idiots to hunt across our land. Step back and think before you make assumptions and whilst you are at it apologise for your uncalled for offensive comments.
I like Foxes but I am also not opposed to Fox hunting
sorry...
I have had a cat and a fox in my garden at the same time (ooh, if only owning machine guns was legal) - cat was averagely wary but not scared and didn't run away.
Please dont call him Basil - bad memories!! Apparently some time ago I dated a man who reminded my friends of Basil Brush and THEY NEVER TOLD ME AT THE TIME!!
no jno they only take kittens, or young pets like baby rabbits, something small and vulnerable. My tom cat is the size of a fox and has jaws that can really grip and devour, he would frighten a fox away.
did he have ginger hair and wear twead waistcoats?
No but they were right - there was a Basilish look about him. One friend sent me a Basisl Brush fridge magnet this week just in case I forgot him!! YUK
I was sat outside my house a few weekends ago, at about 5.30am, waiting for a lift from a friend, there was no one about, very quiet. I noticed that cat was coming towards me, it gracefully sat down next to me, about 1 meter away, I suddenly realised it was not a cat but a really young small fox. Bold as brass it sat there with me. I couldn't believe it. I live in Reading town centre, I often see urban foxes running about, but NEVER has one come so close to me. After a min it got up and scuttled off, probabaly off to rummage in bins for some breakfast.
I know foxes are vermin and a nuisance to lots and lots of people, but I have to admit, it was really really moving.
dot.hawkes, I hope you graciously accept the apology given to you. It seems to me that the perso who accused you of supporting fox hunting is just very protective of her birds and worries for their safety. Yes, she may have been rash with her accusations but it seems she immediately withdrew them when she realised your concern.

It reminds me of a time when me and my now ex argued for days when we found an injured thrush, probably caught by some creature. We were both in uproar! Me accusimg all predators of murderous intentions and him saying that birds were worth no more than any of them. Of course, once we had calmed down we both withdrew our accusations. Those were the times when I was happy with my ex.
