If he is shut indoors all day I'm afraid the place will smell.Regular grooming .I send mine to the groomers every six weeks for a good scrub and have his coat stripped out properly..
Make sure his bedding is washed frequently .You can also get doggy deodorant from the pet shop.I can knit a jumper from Shaney but he doesn't smell !

I've got a magic brush...Can't remember what it's called but it came from one of those Innovation type catalogues. And it works. It runs on a smoke alarm batttery, is totally silent and works like a de-ioniser. Whatever that means. It neutralises the doggy smell I suppose....I wasn't there the day we did Science at school. Handy for those 'rolling' incidents...My dog is too heavy to get into the bath without a team of burly firemen on standby so he has to stand in the shower instead. We try not to do that too often as it traumatises both of us!!
Also keeping dogs off sofas and beds help. And washable covers for the dog bed. And a tip the vet gave me following an operation when the dog was housebound for weeks was to wash his pads....That can help reduce the really pongy doggy smells.

The bad smell from your dog, could come from his skin and coat, his ears and his teeth.
My first suggestion would be to look at the type of food you feed .What do you feed him ?
And If he is fed on pelleted food.
Previous advice on grooming is important, also washing his bedding once a week, and sleeping him on pure cotton .
