Where can I find out how to do some fancy web design?

I've been doing a pretty big website and want to add some fancy bits and pieces like a guestbook, a password protected area and maybe even a forum. I hear you can download add-on thingies but I don't want the logos of other companies messing up my design, and I like the idea of being able to do it myself. Does anyone know anywhere I could either teach myself to do it, or otherwise get some of those premade doodahs, but with as few 'this what-ever-it-is is powered by Big-corporate-company Inc.' things on it (preferably with none). Please bear in mind I have no money so I can't really afford courses or expensive software : )

Thanks in advance

There's a lot of online tutorials in youtube actually. I myself have learned lots of web design stuff from there. But if you consider in getting your website done specially with the latest web technologies and have it done Responsive or mobile website deign, our partner in UK - http://www.boxchilli.com/mobile-sites/ can pretty much help you out with it.
