As a relative newcomer I am often thrown by abbreviations in wordplay. For example in recent puzzles 80 became 'r' and Libya became 'lar'. Do I need to buy Chambers? In a recent puzzle an answer was lulibubs which I didn't solve because none of the websites I use had it - would Chambers have a word like this?

A Chambers does help, to be sure. Although some of the more common abbreviation s can be sourced from other places, it helps to have that single reference: If it isn't in C.
