There were three of us who were best mates at school, one of whom, Jim, started work as a civil-servant in Whitehall and I worked around the corner for London Transport at 55, Broadway as a surveyor. We used to meet for lunch fairly regularly until he got fed up with office work and resigned to go to other fields. The second mate, Ken, took on another trade completely and we lost contact until I signed up with Friends Reunited. After a few weeks I was contacted by Ken who was living in the Midlands and I met up with him and his wife at a midway point between our homes. It turned out to be a surprisingly emotional event, as I learned that Jim had had a successful life designing ceramics for various high end firms around Europe, but sadly contracted a disfiguring form of cancer, from which he did not recover. Indeed, he and a few others were the subject of a TV programme some years ago covering these kinds of cancer. I regret not having seen this programme. However I am, thankfully, still in contact with Ken and his wife.
