Marches before collapse of the Berlin Wall

I recall Brian Redhead asking on the BBC why East Germans assembled on *Mondays* (I think it was), but he never got an explanation.

The most significant demonstrations before the fall of the Wall were in Leipzig. Monday at 17:00 was the traditional time for prayers for peace in the Nikolai church and three other churches in the city centre. These prayer meetings had been held since the early 80s, but it was only in September 1989 that they developed into mass demonstrations. Montagsdemos spread to many other cities in East Germany, but did not necessarily take place on Monday. I remember asking someone in Erfurt whether there were Monday demonstrations similar to those in Leipzig and was told: "We were Thursday".
