Venturer hdd digital audio player, Usb device not recognised

I bought a Venturer 40gb hdd digital audio player, from a carboot stall, and when I plug it into my computer a bubble comes up saying that my usb device is not recognised, I am running windows xp pro, but I have tried this palyer on a laptop with xp pro, another comp with xp pro, and another with xp pro with service pack 2, and I get the same thing coming up.
Has anyone else had this problem, with this player and sorted it.
I have done a google but some of the suggestions I have read do not work, like uninstalling all my usb drivers etc.
The instructions with the machine says I do not need drivers and that xp, and pro will recognise the device, but it doesn't.
Any help with this would be appreciated.

Hardly the sort of thing I would buy from a car-boot sale.

Have you considered the possibility that you might have been sold a pup.

Did you have a look here when you were searching on the Internet? Not sure if the reviews will help you.
Does it appear in My Computer?

Not something I would normally buy from a carboot, took about half hour to decide, the box was with it the papers aswell, and switched on ok, showing digital read out etc, so thought I would give it a chance for �20.
No it does not show up in the my computer, thought I was going to get a virtual drive icon, like my mp3 player.
However when I did a search it seems like other people have the same problems when connecting usb hard drives etc, so I am thinking maybe it is not the player and something to do with a computer setting.
But still cannot find an answer that works.
I have looked at the link thanks but still to no avail.

If as you say, you have tried it on several other computers, it is unlikely that the settings on all of them are at fault.
XP readily accepts this type of peripheral without the need for additional drivers or alteration of settings.
The majority of problems other people suffer are related to older versions of Windows or in the case of USB 2.0, service packs have not been installed.
I would again suggest that it was for sale at a car-boot purely because it was faulty and bought as seen.
