Not sure about the relative merits of each vintage, but, (and without googling), the wine is produced around the town of Chinon in the Loire valley of France - part of the Touraine region. The main grape is the cabernet franc, though other varieties may go into the blend.
Generally, the wine is drunk young, but I don't see a reason why it shouldn't age well.
Wines from Chinon's neighbour, the town of Bourgeuil are also as good - and it's a great place to visit.
The wife of an old friend came from Bourgueil and worked in the power station in Chinon.
