He looked so "manly" that lesbians everywhere still dress like this when they are not being Dolly Parton. Funnily enough he bears a remarkable resemblance to David Hockney. It must be in the water oop north.

That's probably a generalisation. You could say that for women too I guess.
I think generally we have stopped investing in a small number of good quality clothes. People prefer variation and that means making money spread further.
Also, our waistlines are expanding. Many high end stores don't cater to plus sizes.
We've been in a pandemic. People haven't felt like there's been much to celebrate, morale has been low and we're all stuck at home. Not much point in dressing up.
The cost of living is being squeezed. People don't have so much disposable income to throw around.
Trends are changing. Few jobs require a suit these days and a tie is almost unheard of.
All of these are factors at play?
