I've been doing the above puzzle daily since it was advertised on here. For the umpteenth time, having 4 correctly placed letters and with 2 or 3 possible solutions, i have gone alphabetically. And, for the umpteenth time, the solution was the last one selected. Took me 5 attempts again. Talk about frustrating:-(

I got it in 3 today.

Just because the New York Times have bought the puzzle does not necessarily mean we will have to pay for it in future.
The NYT puzzle section lets you play most games by registering, not subscribing.

I had my first go and got it in 2. But I don't understand how this one a day works. Please can someone help me to understand.

I'm not techy enough to explain that, use a different device and keep doing it over again - though, why would you?

Because when you bring it up again it just shows the one you have done, there's no option to do another one until the next day

Isn't it a version of the game "Mastermind" ...... but letters instead of colours?

Yes, it is, teacher, but of course there is a much bigger choice of letters than the Mastermind colours.
