I was making a cuppa looking out of my kitchen window and young unmarried mother who lives opposite had someone knock at her door, when she opened it he threw a small white crumpled package onto the floor in her hall, and she went back in and came back to the door and surreptitiously put something into his hand. I know what I think it was, but is it any of my business? Her son is around 8 or 9 and they never seem to have a lot of money, but she smokes which makes me cross as he always looks like he is wearing clothes too small for him and trainers with the soles flapping. Do I just let it go or do you think it is my duty to report it - I can't prove anything and wouldn't want to cause her any grief but if its what I think it is I don't want the likes of him round here.

If the child isn't appropriately dressed or shoe especially considering the time of year, and you have any concerns about how she is managing you could call an organisation like childline or the NSPCC They take calls from adults too. She may well already be known to social services and either organisation will make a few simple enquiries. Better a hundred false alarms than one genuine case missed. You can stay anonymous.
