If I remember correctly, when I was a young lad (1940s), Ladies Only railway carriages could be found on many trains.

Some Scottish folk want a return to these good old days apparently :-

Have their ever been women-only carriages for safety reasons?

I suspect not.

So not a question of turning the clock back, just a question of "would they work" Potentially they could make things worse I'd have thought.

I was too young to understand the "safety" aspect, so I don't know what the thinking was behind it.
As you can identify as a woman even if you're a bloke this doesn't make sense.
They have them on the underground system in Tokyo. Carriages are painted pink. One time Mr.Sam got on with me by mistake and got some filthy looks. Once we realized we alighted at the next stop.
I can remember back to the 1940's but never came across a ladies only coach on the trains.
I can remember Ladies only waiting rooms as well.
Apparently there were a limited number of such coaches.

Back in the day railway carriages had separate compartments which held about 8 or 10 people.; once you got into a compartment you were stuck there until the train stopped so I can understand ladies wanting ladies-only compartments. With the current system of open carriages it seems unnecessary.
Can we have men only carriages?
But how would you stop those who 'identify' as women using them with impunity?
And why not if enough want it? But they would need proof they were born female .
Don't remember ladies only carriages, but I think there used to be ladies only waiting rooms?

Still have them in India and Japan.
They have 'women and children' coaches on the Dubai metro too...again painted pink, but its actually a coach and a half, so very easy to sit in the wrong bit...like I did. Not a problem though. A young lady politely pointed out my error and I moved.
