Icloud On My Mac

I've resisted using 'cloud' storage as I like to keep my stuff closer, but increasingly I'm sitting somewhere else with my iPad and wanting to access some file from my desktop machine.

How safe/unsafe is iCloud storage (I'm a Mac user)? What does it do? Could I 'allow' my Quark files on my Mac Mini (desktop) to be stored on the 'cloud' and could I then access them through my iPad?

What are quark files? Yes my files are stored in icloud and I can access them from my ipad as well as my laptop. Inwouldn’t make it my only place of storage or store things that would have serious consequences if stolen....like bank passwords but most of what I store is neither seriously confidential or interesting

Files created by the program QuarkXpress - it’s a posh word-processing program which I use because it was what we had at work(!)

Can you STOP the system saving certain files to the Cloud? I sometimes have sensitive things on my desktop - how do I keep these from being clouded?

Save them to a usb or ehd

But if I connect my usb (say memory stick) to my machine, and they appear on the desktop, doesn’t iCloud see them as fair game?

I don’t think so...but my laptop is away for repairs so I can’t test it.

Thanks woof, although having a cursory glance at that article it seems to be about a COMPLETE turning on/off of the cloud take-up, i.e. Documents Folder & Desktop ON, or OFF, rather than individual files. I'll read it more carefully this p.m.
